Most often you will meet a picture that is on the screen, you will often hear “oil on canvas” when it comes to painting, but that does not mean that it is the only possible foundation for oil and acrylic paint. The truth is that it is the most popular, the reason is its durability and durability, ease in transport and exposure. However, among painters there are those whose work method requires a different substrate, there are those whose ideas do not satisfy a flat surface of a simple shape, and some simply want to create works that are distinguished by being placed on unusual materials.
No matter what it is, the image has a task to last. In order to ensure this durability, it is important to take care of all the rules related to painting alone, but what can be more and more important to respect are the rules on how to prepare the substrate and what kind of backgrounds are adequate for the image to be born on them. An improperly prepared surface can lead to tiny problems such as dyeing, which is a consequence of too much absorbent substrate, and you will notice this during work, but it can also cause cracking and peeling of painted layers, which is a serious problem that you will not be able to easily solve. Even most likely, it will not appear during the imaging process, but will allow you to finish the picture and appear for several months or even years later.
Painting on a tree
That among you there are just those who would like to experiment, get out of the cliché and paint on the lids of wooden boxes, styrofoam or stone, and they are not sure if it’s ok and the material that prepares it is necessary, we know it reliably because you are talking about it писали. We will try to answer your questions and remind you of a few more important steps in selecting and preparing the painting background. After the canvas, the most popular image maker is just a tree, so it deserves the most attention, and today it will be a theme.
Wooden lining can be in different shapes – like solid wood or alternatively in the form of hardwood, mediapan and chipboard, which are easier to find and financially more favorable. Also, the carrier of your image can be a wooden board that will stand alone, or the picture will be part of the furniture (the wooden box cover, clocks or chairs are often depicted). First of all, you need to choose the tree wisely – if you want to take a picture on a classic board, it has to be dry and it is desirable that the special technique is made up of more pieces that will not be blamed over time. You will find such boards in the market mainly as boards for icons.
When you have the necessary dimension, it is best to paste a piece of laundered / flaxen fabric over wood or some of the panels using a glue for wood or some of the acrylic gel media, strictly ensuring that there is no trapped air bubbles left between the wood and the cloth. Sticking the cloth ensured the stability of the substrate and avoided the possible cracking of the paint layers due to the operation of the wood. The cloth you have sealed after drying can be treated as you would and the canvas tapped on a wooden frame – coat it with a layer of woodfix or acrylic binder, and then apply a few thin layers of primer / gessa, leaving each to dry before applying the next with the souring of the finest sanding if you want an extremely smooth surface. You can take pictures of tempered, acrylic or oil paints on the prepared boards.
Decorating wooden surfaces
Of course, when you want to paint pieces of wooden furniture, canvas can not be a solution. In these cases, it is not necessary, as they usually represent smaller areas or the colored layers appear only partially. The only thing that needs attention in these cases is just a tree.
How often do we want to rearrange a piece of old furniture, the first step in preparing a wooden surface in this case should be checking for mold and mold and their removal with alcohol or vinegar. Also, check if there are layers of old paint that cracked and peeled – they should be removed in more detail with a scroll because they will drop sooner or later, so do not risk losing part of your painted decoration in which you invested time and energy. Then everything should go through the sandwich to cross between the parts where it still has colors and those where the paint has gone off smoothly, and then it is necessary to remove all the dust with a brush or a solution of water and detergent if the deposits are more serious.
When you have a clean and completely dry wooden surface in front of you, you must check whether the wood has been treated before, whether it has color or varnish coatings and whether it is acrylic based or oil-solvent based. Be guided by the rule that you can paint on acrylic paint with any other color, but it is not recommended to paint or apply acrylic and water based products on oil-based paint, because they can be peeled from it. If there are no old layers, you can already begin to paint acrylic colors – the surface, therefore, you do not need to coat the example if you want to save color and visible structure only
